Doctor Kholkin has worked many years in multiple areas, most of them related to processing, characterization and applications of ferroelectric materials. His contributions made possible several modern applications viable as seen from the long perspective. He was then one who discovered thermoplarization effect in ferroelectrics as predicted by Gurevich and Tagantsev in the end of 70s.Large ferroelectric polarization was understood to be very useful in ferroelectric field transistors in the middle of 80s. Prof. Kholkin’s seminal work on ferroelectric field effect in superconductors laid foundations of using depletion/accumulation by ferroelectrics to shift the superconducting transition and to modulate resistivity in the mixed state. This work has led to the concept of “metallic electronics” as mentioned by Andre Geim in his Nobel Lecture on graphene in December 2010).
