General information

Yoshihide Hayashizaki is a renowned researcher known all over the world as a leading specialist in the field of genome research. Results of his research have been published in the most popular journals, such as «‎Nature»‎, «‎Science»‎, «‎Genome research»‎, and others.

In 1992, the scientist joined the RIKEN Institute and in 1995 he was appointed director of a project for genome research. Since then, Yoshihide Hayashizaki has been applying a transversal approach based on data for the analysis of transcriptomes by developing a unique technology. These activities were followed by the organisation of the FANTOM consortium (Functional Annotation of the Mammalian Genome). Over the course of the implementation of the FANTOM project, the FANTOM database has been created as well as the FANTOM bank of full-genome cDNAs. As a result, FANTOM's resources have been used in a number of important research projects. For example, the database of complete length cDNAs was used in the computer forecasting of the genome position (transcription unit) of genes by the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium. The data was also used by the research group of Dr. Shinya Yamanaka at Kyoto University (Japan) to create induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. In projects lead by Yoshihide Hayashizaki, original technologies have been developed (such as full-genome cDNA libraries, CAGE, GSC) with subsequent mass use. This allowed to produce the fullest description of any transcriptome as of now. A map of the majority of human promoters and a comparative transcriptional regulatory network.
