Project objective: Creating scientific base for solving problems in mechanics of deformed solid bodies, study of fundamental laws of behavior of construction and functional materials (steels and alloys, polymers, rocks)


The practical value of the study

  • We have developed new methods of elaborate experimental research of behavior of metals, alloys and composite materials under complex thermo-mechanical impacts.
  • Our researchers have obtained new data on processes of deformation, accumulation of damage and destruction of aircraft alloys, fiber polymer composites and structural elements.
  • We have found laws of deformation of structural elements of chamber systems in the presence of increased clay accumulation in the massive.
  • Our researchers have obtained results of assessment of impart of utilization factors on characteristics of modern composite materials for aerospace industry; new data has been obtained concerning low cycle fatigue and post-critical deformation of steels and alloys in the presence of complex loads and thermo-mechanical fatigue.
  • We have obtained results of study of laws of plastic deformation of construction and functional materials in the intensely deformed state based on analysis of deformation and temperature fields; we found the effect of quasi-periodic homogenization of plastic flow in the context of Chernov-Lüders deformation Portevin-Le Chatelier effect.
  • The Laboratory has developed multi-level models of non-elastic deformation of polycrystalline metals and alloys including description of the most important mechanisms of implementation of the process on various levels (intragranular and grain-boundary sliding, twinning, processes of fragmentation and splitting of grains) and evolution of internal structure.

Implemented results of research:

  • Implementation of developed experimental research methods for static and fatigue endurance of aircraft materials are used by «UEC Saturn» and «UEC-Aviadvigatel».
  • We have created an information system for physical and mechanical qualities of types of rock-salts of the Verkhne-Kamskoe deposit that allows to conduct computations of parameters of mining for different regions of mining fields.
  • We have developed a software complex to assess safety of mining operations in complex geological conditions. We have justified constructive measures to prevent flooding mines of «Uralkaliy» JSC.
  • Our researchers have created a software complex for solving marginal problems of mechanical loading of polycrystalline metals and alloys using proposed multi-level models of materials.

Education and career development:

  • We have developed and launched 3 programs for masters: «Experimental materials mechanics», «Experimental composite mechanics», «Deformation, destruction and structural integrity »; 2 programs for postgraduates majoring in «Mechanics of deformed solid bodies»: «Modeling deformation and destruction processes for materials and elements of structures», «Experimental mechanics of construction materials»; 1 additional training program «Modern experimental methods and tools for deformation and durability qualities of materials». We have also developed a new program for bachelors majoring in «Nanotechnologies» and obtained a license for providing education services.
  • 2 doctoral dissertations and 11 candidate dissertations have been defended.
  • We have been conducting case studies for master and bachelor and master students of the Perm National Research Polytechnic University; we have also organized a students' laboratory for extracurricular work

Organizational and structural changes:

We have submitted our Collective Utilization Center «Center for Experimental Mechanics» to the «Scientific and Technological Infrastructure of the Russian Federation» portal in 2015 and the Unique Scientific Units «Complex of experimental and diagnostic equipment for assessment of qualities of construction and functional materials under complex thermomechanical impacts» in 2017.

Other results:

  • We have developed a theory for deformation of fiber composite materials that have linear deformation diagrams when impact is applied in the direction of fibers and significantly non-linear in the presence of strain shift when impact is applied askew relative to direction of reinforcement. This effect is observed in experimental research in the majority of fiber composites. We have proposed an original method to simultaneously describe linear and non-linear behavior of anisotropic composite materials dependent on the type of external impact based on a unique idea of introducing an additional matrix and a scalar parameter connected with it to the determining equations.
  • Our Laboratory has developed an approach to modeling process of deformation, accumulation of damage and destruction of prospective composite materials accounting for physical non-linearity of their qualities. We have researched impact of non-linearity of shift characteristics of stratified polymer composite materials on distribution of strain, the process of accumulation of damage and characteristics of destruction of composite elements of structures with strain concentrators.
  • We have developed an algorithm for numerical modeling of process of deformation and destruction of prospective composite materials based on the created theory and demonstrated good correlation of theoretical laws with results of experiments. From this work we have inferred a number of laws of destruction of composite constructive elements with strain concentrators.
