General information

Name of the project: Quantitative and experimental research of non-equilibrium flows with applications to spacecraft

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: е

Goals and objectives

Research directions:

Finding fundamental physical laws and solving applied aerospace problems in aerodynamics of prospective spacecraft, traditional and state-of-the-art technologies of creating reactive drag, gas and multiphase flows in microdevices and micromuzzle, developing of instability and laminar-turbulent transition in hypersound flows

Project objective: Obtaining new fundamental knowledge that will allow us to significantly enhance understanding of non-equilibrium flows drastically improving capabilities of researchers and engineers in describing and forecasting their qualities as well as to lay the scientific basis for developing new generations of spacecraft

The practical value of the study

  • New powerful supercomputer software for quantitative modeling of non-equilibrium flows has been created.
  • We have developed new methods and tools for experimental research of non-equilibrium flows, in particular, a method to determine composition and structure of disturbances in hypersound flows based on mode decomposition.
  • Our researchers have conducted computations of high altitude aerodynamics of spacecraft in transitional flow modes using hybrid supercomputers accounting for ionization, radiation and surface recombination, modeling control of transition to turbulence in the transitional layer at big Mach number values.

Implemented results of research:

  • We have received several patents for methods to modernize hypersound high enthalpy aerodynamic tubes that have been used to conduct works within contracts for the defense industry. We have conducted research of heating surface of aircraft and provided characteristics of distributed and integral heat flows on its surface.
  • Computational and experimental research methods for non-equilibrium processes in hypersound flows developed at the Laboratory is used in several project of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian science foundation and in state budget-sponsored works of the Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Education and career development:

  • Internships for 10 undergraduates, postgraduates and young scientists.
  • We have organized the «Workshop on Non-equilibrium Flow Phenomena in Honor of Mikhail Ivanov's 70th Birthday» (2015).
  • 2 doctoral dissertation, 5 candidate dissertation have been defended.
  • 10 lecture courses introduced into educational processes: 1) Viscous gas dynamic, turbulence and jets (bachelors program, 2014); 2) Gas dynamics of stationary and non-stationary processes (bachelors program, 2014); 3) Computational aerohydrodynamics: classics and modern ideas (bachelors program, 2014); 4) Quantitative modeling of currents of viscous heat conducting gas using the ANSYS Fluent software package (masters program, 2014); 5) Research of problems of sparse gas dynamics using the SMILE computation system (masters program, 2015); 6) Methods of experimental data processing (masters program, 2015); 7) History of fluid and gas mechanics (masters program, 2015); 8) Fluid and gas flow control (masters program, 2015); 9) Computational methods of gas dynamics (masters program, 2015); 10) Critical problems of developing prospective aircraft (masters program, 2015).

Collaborations:

  • Institute of Fluid Mechanics of the Tohoku University (Japan): validation of physical and mathematical models describing processes in high enthalpy non-equilibrium gas flow, comparison with experimental data in field and air environments
  • Zhukovskiy Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute – TsAGI (Russia): joint research of critical parts of a high enthalpy aerodynamic tube that are designed for building a new type of devices, collaborative research of impact of localized cooling of surface of hypersound aircraft on laminar-turbulent transition
  • Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Russia): testing theoretical research of interface layer stability under sectional change of surface temperature of hypersound aircraft, joint research in development of disturbances on embossed surfaces of hypersound aircraft
  • Saint Petersburg State University (Russia): conducting schools and seminars featuring leading scientists in non-equilibrium flows for postgraduates and young researchers of the Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Saint Petersburg State University.
