General information

Name of the project: Development of expression systems based on transgenic agricultural plants for producing substances for veterinary and medical applications.

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: г

Goals and objectives
Research directions: Plant genetic engineering, development of agrobacterial and ballistic methods of production of transgenic agrobacterial fruit, berry, vegetable and decorative cultures with new economically important properties

Project objective: Development of expression systems based on transgenic agricultural plants for producing substances for veterinary and medical applications, including development of a strategy of production of edible vaccines against rabies for agricultural animals; growing plants – producers of «universal» edible vaccines against bird and swine flu; production of plants that produce artemisin, an anti-malaria agent

The practical value of the study

  • We have produced vector structures for synthesis of synthesis of vector proteins against flu, rabies as well as the artemisin anti-malaria agent in plant.
  • We have produced first transgenic plants of common duckweed, tobacco, wolffia arrhiza and chrysantheme that express these genes.
  • Our researchers have studied dynamics of growth of duckweeds with content of crude protein and dry matter in plants depending on composition of cultivation environments. As a result of research we selected a composition of environment that is optimal for cultivation of duckweeds – the optimal concentration of macro- and microelements and sucrose.
  • The Laboratory has developed protocols of extraction and partial purification of vaccine proteins containing a ricin B subunit. We have developed buffers that are optimal for extraction of proteins from tobacco and duckweed plant biomass; a protocol has been developed for deep purification of recombinant proteins from admixtures and their concentration using differential fractionation by ammonium sulfate.
