General information

The development in the Russian Federation of such modern sciences as “Heritage Science” and “Natural Sciences applied to Cultural Heritage”, in the field of scientific research in-situ using the example of Russian medieval painting and architecture decor, as well as Russian avant-garde, using optical spectroscopy and tomography methods, as well as by creating a laboratory at ITMO University and as part of it a mobile team, equipped with innovative portable instruments.

Goals and objectives
Goals:

The development of such modern academic fields as heritage studies and natural sciences for cultural heritage in Russia, in the domain of in situ research exemplified by Old Russian paintings and architectural decor as well as the Russian avant-garde using optical spectroscopy and tomography methods. A laboratory will be created at ITMO University that will feature a mobile group equipped with innovative portable devices.

Project objectives:

  1. The creation of a laboratory specialising in the research of items of museum collections and cultural heritage objects at ITMO university with the application of optical spectroscopy and tomography methods. A mobile group will be created within the laboratory that will be equipped with portable devices for in situ scientific research;
  2. Methodologies for the study of the technology of Old East Slavic paintings, including frescoes that remain in their historical locations in medieval churches on the basis of the application of optical spectroscopy and tomography methods. The testing of the applicability of these methodologies for the determination of the time, the location, the methods of the production of paint, the dye types and technologies of their production       .
  3. The development of methods for the detection of dating features in Old East Slavic architectural decor, including glass ceramic materials, in the locations of monuments on the basis of the application of optical spectroscopy methods. The research of the applicability of these methods for the determination of the time, the location, the methods of production, the dye types, and the opalescence   agent.
  4. The development of methodologies for the detection of counterfeit Russian avant-garde art by means of optical spectroscopy and tomography. The testing of the applicability of these methods for the determination of the paint composition. The development of methodologies of artificial canvas and paint ageing.
The practical value of the study
Projected research results: 

  1. The Laboratory at ITMO University specialising in the research of items of museum collections and cultural heritage objects using optical spectroscopy and tomography methods. The laboratory will feature a mobile group equipped with portable devices for conducting in situ research.
  2. Methodologies for the study of the technology of Old East Slavic art, including frescoes remaining in their original locations, using optical spectroscopy and tomography methods.
  3. Methodologies for the determination of dating features in Old East Slavic architectural decor, including glass ceramic materials in the locations of monuments, based on optical spectroscopy methods.
  4. Methodologies of the detection of counterfeit Russian avant-garde art works using optical spectroscopy and tomography methods.
