General information

Name of the project: Extreme light fields and their applications.

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: б, в, д

Goals and objectives

Project objective: Obtaining fundamental knowledge concerning interactions of extremely string light fields with matter, developing methods of laser particle acceleration and generation of extremely short light pulses, creation of highly efficient sources and detectors of terahertz radiation.

Research directions: Interaction of super-strong light field and matter, attosecond physics, terahertz optics

The practical value of the study

  • We have proposed new principles of application of super-strong optical pulses for creation of ultraviolet and X-ray radiation sources with record-high luminosity.
  • The Laboratory has proposed methods of transformation of optical pulses to terahertz radiation with record-high efficiency, as well as methods of terahertz spectroscopy and introscopy.
  • We have developed highly efficient computational code for supercomputer modeling interaction of super-strong laser radiation with matter.
  • Our researchers have achieved generation of proton beams with record high energy – over 40 MeV.

Implemented results of research:

  • The Laboratory participates in creation of the most powerful laser thermonuclear fusion facility in the Russian Federation at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center in Sarov.
  • Relying on developed methods of generation and detection of terahertz radiation we have created a compact terahertz spectrometer for identification of substances from their spectral «fingerprints» and visualization of the inner structure of non-transparent media, for example. of pharmaceuticals, art objects and archaelogical artifacts.

Education and career development:

  • We have developed special courses for senior year undergraduate students, masters students and postgraduates in disciplines «Super-strong optical fields», «Attosecond optics», «Femtosecond optics», «Powerful laser systems», «Methodology of terahertz experiments», «Terahertz optics» and others.
  • The Laboratory has been organizing internships and academic trips to advanced training at foreign research centers for postgraduates and young researchers.
  • 7 candidate dissertations have been defended.

Organizational and structural changes:

  • We have created a laboratory complex for research of interactions of petawatt laser pulses with matter.
  • We have created a laboratory of powerful laser systems in collaboration with the Russian Federal Nuclear Center (Sarov).
  • A laboratory complex is being developed for laser particle acceleration at the Center of Innovative Development of Medical Equipment of the Nizhniy Novgorod State University.

  • Institut de Lumière Extrême (France), Institute of Laser Engineering of the Osaka University (Japan), Research Center for Development of Far-Infrared Region of the University of Fukui (Japan), Ludwig Maximilian University (Germany), Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Russsia): joint research and publications in international journals
  • Center for Research and Restoration of the Louvre Museum (France), University of Central Florida (USA), Harvard University (USA), University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (China PR), Tianjin University (China PR), Technical University of Denmark (Denmark): joint research, internships of postgraduates and publications in international journals
