Э. Отани является автором или редактором 15 монографий. Список публикаций включает более 250 статей в рецензируемых журналах, включая множество статей в журналах Nature и Science.

Премия Института Атомных исследований Японии, 1998.

Премия Н.Л. Боуэна Американского геофизического союза, 2007.

Звание Заслуженного профессора университета Тохоку, 2008-2013 (дважды).

Медаль с пурпурной лентой, Medal with Purple Ribbon (высшая государственная награда Японии за выдающиеся достижения в области науки и искусства, 2010).

Принимал участие, как консультант программы по обнаружению геонейтрино на подземной установке в Университете Тохоку, а с 2013 г. также является одним из лидеров новой "Глобальной программы предотвращения природных катастроф" в Университете Тохоку, созданной после разрушительного землетрясения 2011 г.
