Laboratory for photoacoustic Theranostics

About Laboratory

Grant Agreement No.: 14.Z50.31.0044
Project name: Photoacoustic technologies for early theranostics of metastatic tumors
Name of the institution of higher learning: Saratov State University
Fields of scientific research: Medical technologies

The goal of the project is to create a world-class laboratory in the field of photoacoustic (PA) technologies with a focus on biomedical photoacoustics for the development of revolutionary approaches in diagnosis and therapy (such integration is termed theranostics) of circulating pathological cells that are early markers or precursors of fatal diseases such as tumor metastases, strokes and infectious sepsis (in Russia such studies are not conducted yet).

Name:  Zharov Vladimir Pavlovich

Academic degree and title: Doctorate Degree in Engineering
Job Title: Professor, Director of Arkansas Nanomedicine Center, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (USA)
Field of scientific interests: Laser spectroscopy, photoacoustics, biophotonics, nanomedicine, theranostics

Scientific recognition:
1992 - State Prize Winner Russian Government 1992
1993 - Theodore H. Maiman (inventor of the first laser) Award Laser Institute of America and
American professional society for optics and photonics technology (SPIE)

Scientific work of the leading scientist, his/her main scientific achievements:
Prof. Zharov is the world-recognized leader in photoacoustics (PA) and nanomedicine. He pioneered in vivo blood test and in vivo theranostics of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and bacteria using PA flow cytometry and photothermal (PT) effects, which has been successfully used in clinical trials. He developed nonlinear PA spectroscopy and super-resolution microscopy; pioneered in 2002 application of nanotechnology for killing cancer cells and bacteria using laser-induced nanobubbles; and discovered ultrasharp PA resonances in plasmonics named after him “Zharov Splitting.” He also developed novel anticancer PT- nanodrug; and introduced spasers as supercontrast biomarkers. Zharov received unique education at elite Russian (BMSTU and MSU) and American (Berkeley) universities/
