A major goal of the project is the identification and characterization of allergic immune response to the major birch pollen allergen, Bet v 1 in the Russian population with a view towards developing innovative diagnostic test systems for the identification of recombinant allergen-derivatives, antibodies and synthetic peptides which can be used for the therapy and prevention of allergy to birch pollen.

Field of scientific interests: Basic and mechanistic studies of his group include the molecular characterization of cross-reactive allergens as explanation for allergic cross-reactivity, the demonstration of IgE autoreactivity as possible pathomechanism in severe allergy, and studies regarding the role of T cells and T cell-mediated pathology in allergy. In more recent work Rudolf Valenta has characterized rhinovirus coat proteins for serological diagnosis and for vaccination of rhinovirus infections which are major risk factors for severe asthma attacks.

Rudolf Valenta studied medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna (now MedUni Vienna), completed his postdoctoral qualification in general and experimental pathology and specialised in the fields of pathophysiology and immunology. He has been Professor of Allergology since 2004. He heads up the Division of Immunopathology at MedUni Vienna's Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research. He is coordinator of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)-sponsored special research area F46 "Towards prevention and therapy of allergy”.He currently has around 550 scientific publications to his name, with over 20,000 citations (h-index 83 according to Scopus). He is the author or co-author of 132 international patents. Rudolf Valenta is a member of MedUni Vienna Senate. In 2012, he was named MedUni Vienna’s "Inventor of the Year”. In 2016, he accepted a Foreign Adjunct Professorship at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Also in 2016, he received the International Distinguished Fellow Award conferred by the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI).
