Attraction of the leading scientists to Russian institutions of higher learning, research organizations of the governmental academies of sciences, and governmental research centers of the Russian Federation

Genome editing laboratory

About laboratory

This laboratory was established as part of a scientific research project supported with a monetary grant awarded by the Government of the Russian Federation under a grant competition designed to provide governmental support to scientific research projects implemented under the supervision of the world's leading scientists at Russian institutions of higher learning (Resolution of the RF Government No.220 of April 9, 2010)..

Grant Agreement No.: 14.W03.31.0007

Project name:

Molecular mechanisms of RNA interference and genome protection in bacteria and eukaryotes

Name of the institution of higher learning:

Institute of Molecular Genetics Russian Academy of Sciences

Fields of scientific research:

The new lab will study natural functions of small non-coding RNAs in eu- and prokaryotes and explore the use of RNAi mechanisms for development of new tools for basic research and potential therapeutic applications.

Leading scientist

Aravin Alexei Alexeevich

Date of Birth: 02.11.1976

Citzenship: Russia

Job Title:

California Institute of Technology, USA

Academic degree and title: Professor

Field of scientific interests:

RNA biology, regulation of gene expression, epigenetics, mobile elements

Academic recognition:

Dr. А. Aravin has made significant and important contributions to Life Sciences, particularly in the fields of RNA biology and regulation of gene expression. He discovered a new class of non-coding RNA, the finding that was listed as one of the breakthroughs of the year by Science, the top research journal. Then he followed his discovery to understand functions of non-coding RNAs in genome protection against invader elements. Since 2010, when Dr. Aravin was appointed an Assistant Professor of Biology at the California Institute of Technology he established a powerful laboratory. Research program established by Dr. Aravin is very successful, even by the very high standards of California Institute of Technology, one of the top research universities in the world. Dr. Aravin obtained more than $5.5 million in direct laboratory funding. Dr. Aravin published more than 60 important and highly cited papers. Dr. Aravin served as an invited speaker at major international meetings. Dr. Aravin was a recipient of many prestigious awards, including the highest NIH award for young group leaders, NIH Director New Innovator award and very selective Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering.
